VHS Tape Lifespan

Why should you convert VHS Tapes to DVD?

I'm sure you have lots of old VHS tapes stacked on your book shelf or tucked away in a box in the garage. Although you may still enjoy watching some of your irreplaceable home videos from time to time it's no lie that they are deteriorating even when your not watching them or using them at all. The life span of an average VHS tape is anywhere from 8-20+ years all depending on the storage conditions.

Proper storage conditions are very important if you want to maintain video quality and the lifespan of your VHS tapes much longer than the average. The only problem is that the proper storage conditions are not storing VHS tapes on a book self or dry box. A better way to store VHS tapes for low video and audio deterioration is putting the VHS tape inside two freezer bags and storing them in a room around 40*F with about 25% humidity.

So it's time to get a dehumidifer and a few dozen freezer bags and start turning back the thermostat to an arctic 40*F in your house! :-)

If that dosn't sound like somthing you want to do; it would be a good idea for you to transfer your VHS tapes to somthing that is more reliable and durable that can also extend your video and audio quality for much much longer than VHS tapes even with the correct storage conditions.

On my next page I am going to tell you why it is a good idea to transfer VHS tapes to DVDs and show you my favorite way to transfer VHS tapes to DVD.
